Traditional uses

In Ayurveda, it has been identified with various names viz., vijaysar, asana, bijaka, priyaka, and pitashala. In Ayurveda, the plant has been used as one of the important ingredients in preparations to manage diabetes. Since ancient times, Ayurvedacharyas used blocks or pieces of Pterocarpus to manage diabetes. Pieces of bark were soaked in water overnight, strained, and the soaked water taken by diabetic patients. Water stored in the tumblers carved from the wood of Pterocarpus has been believed to support healthy blood sugar levels. Its various parts have been used in the preparations aimed to soothe dry flaky irritated skin, reduce the appearance of wrinkles/dark circles, to support normal blood physiology, to promote urinary tract health, to support weight management, and to support healthy cholesterol levels.
